When You Need A Car Despite Your PastIf you can afford to buy a little time, the first step you should take is to do a little work on improving your credit. Get a credit report so you know what you are looking at. The three leading credit sources are Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. Many internet sites offer simple tips on how to improve your scores. Making credit card payments as soon as the bill arrives, for example, instead of waiting to the end of the payment period can help improve your score. Once you have your latest credit report in hand, take a look at your scores and do some rate comparisons on the internet before going car shopping. Many lenders that specialize in car financing for bad credit will post interest rates that correspond to specific credit scores. Once you have a ball park idea of your potential interest rate, use a car financing calculator to get a clear picture as to your eventual monthly payments. After all this you can go shopping. Another credit related bit of advice has to do with the frequency of credit reports that are generated on your behalf. Don’t allow every dealer in town to do a credit check on you until you are absolutely ready to make a purchase. By taking your credit report with you, any dealer, simply by looking at your credit scores in hand, will have a good idea if a deal is doable and at what interest rate. In the case of bad credit car financing you will obviously have more limited choices. Maybe the local Honda or Toyota dealer, upon looking at your credit report, will tell you that financing is not likely. But the Ford dealer across the street may be affiliated with a lender with more flexibility. The key is to work out all the details and be forthcoming with your present financial situation before applying for any loan. Remember, information is power. Many people, knowing they have had a rough time of it of late, are willing to accept any loan regardless of how abusive it is. Try to avoid that mindset. Bad credit auto financing should be looked at in relative terms. Minimize the ¨bad¨ by doing some homework and knowing where you stand before you get blindsided by a silver-tongued salesperson. |
